About Reading3000
What is Reading3000?
Founded by Neil Applegate, Reading3000 aims to have 3000 people in the RG postcode area giving £1 per month for 5 years (or a one-off donation of £60) to make the community of Chiaquelane, Mozambique self-sustainable. We measure the giving in units: one unit is equivalent to this donation of £60 over five years.
Can I give more than that?
By all means! Just let us know when you join.
How did Reading3000 start?
Reading3000 is the story of a partnership between the affluent town of Reading and a developing community in one of the poorest parts of Africa.
In November 2000, Pastor Hendrick Mahlangu (pictured right), the director of a small South African Christian charity "Hope for Africa", visited Reading on the invitation of Neil Applegate, a Reading-based board member of the UK charity "WorldShare". Hope for Africa is one of WorldShare's indigenous partner charities, working for mission, relief and development in southern Africa. Pastor Hendrick was previously the director of a successful building firm in South Africa, until he came to Christ, changing the whole direction of his life.
At that Reading meeting, Pastor Hendrick shared his vision for an embryonic work in southern Mozambique, in the area devastated by the floods of early 2000. By God's grace, Hope for Africa had been planting churches in that very area, in a village called Chiaquelane, and was able to become involved in helping to rebuild the community.
As Pastor Hendrick shared the needs of the new project, Neil Applegate became aware of the potential for a "twinning" partnership between Reading churches and Chiaquelane, knowing that just a fraction of the wealth of Reading could make a substantial difference in the future of the stricken community. A budget of £3000 a month for five years had been proposed by Hope for Africa, and the vision of Reading 3000 was born - 3000 people in the Reading area giving just £1 a month for five years.

Can other groups chip in?
Yes, we welcome donations from all sorts of people. For example, you might like to club together as a housegroup to fund a unit's worth or two. Perhaps if you are at school, you could get your class or Christian Union involved. Maybe you know a group of people at work that might be interested. Contact us for resources, or click here.
